Q1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
While conducting our research on the bands that were associated with the rock genre such as; Paramore, 30 seconds to Mars and Big Delusion we noticed certain aspects of the videos that related to the rock genre. These were; atmospheric locations and dramatic performances. Our music video challenges these conventions of the rock genre as we have incorporated a highly detailed narrative to accompany the performance side of the video. This narrative is a highly important part of our video as it allows us to link lyrics and visuals together. A narrative is slightly common in music videos but it is the way we have presented ours that is unique to normal media conventions. Our narrative sequence uses a form of imaging where a person is filmed twice to seem to be two separate people. In this case a black t-shirt and a white t-shirt were used to connote the idea of one good side to the person and one bad side. They then confront each other in the climax. However in contrast to us challenging the conventions of real media products we have also incorporated the characteristics normally seen in rock music videos as well to relate to the genre. We selected our filming locations very carefully in order to relate them to the rock genre. we used lighting and shading in these areas to our advantage as it allowed us to get the atmospheric result we wanted. we also used colour to relater to the rock genre. the colours red and black were ultimately a theme throughout as we used them to connote with the rock genre and in some ways to relate with the title of the song 'Bloody Hands'.
This video illustrates how Paramore uses common conventions of media products in their published work.
Q2 - How did you use media technologies in construction, research, planning and evaluation changes? The computer programme 'Final Cut Express was used in the additional construction of the music video. This programme allowed us to put our footage together and add the appropriate effects for our video to be able to apply to the conventions of a rock video. These were effects such as saturate and colour corrector. The most commonly used media technology in this project is our blog This was the base of our whole music video project as everything we did was put on there including treatment, initial ideas, textural analysis and clips of our footage. This blog is a vital part of our coursework as without it we would get no credit for the work we did or any of the accompanying marks for the coursework. We used a standard DV format to construct our music video. We used the Microsoft word programme throughout our research and planning stages where we found it necessary. Q3. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? During the manufacture of our product we had to complete cettain design tasks to create the full product. one of these was a digipak. The digipak was a CD case and CD of the song we created the video for. it included pictures of our band taken from our own video, the name of the song, the length of the song, and the band name. These are requirements used on all produced CD's sold as a mode of advertising the product to the public. The combination of our main product and ancillary text is very important during the selling stages of our product as if we make our digipak more attractive to the target audience we develop after our music video has been published then the overall success of our product. to create this effect of lasting popularity we needed to create a highly noticeable link between the digipak and the main product. We did this in many ways, the colour scheme and layout were the first things we considered while trying to create this link. the layout and colour scheme had to be linked to the rock genre as this was what our product is. we used a red and black colour for our digipak as these were seen commonly in our video and are colours highly associtated with the rock genre. The layout we used was chosen for our digipak was bold and eye-catching and also in a contrasting colour to our background which will help the product be overly more appealing when it is sold. Another form of creating a link between our ancillary texts and our main product was incorporating the images from our video onto the digipak. the images we used were of the band members and they were used as a way of advertising the band to those who may wish to purchase the CD. 4. What have your learnt from your audience feedback? in the research and planning stages, one of the requirements that had to be included in the work was audience feedback either in questionnaires or comments from our audience while watching our product. Before we had completed the video we conducted an audience questionnaire in which we asked a random sample of people to complete a survey to find out information such as what gender they were, what age, what types of music they listend to and as rock was our chosen genre, what they expected to see in our finished video. From this audience questionnaire we were able to create a target audience profile from information we recieved from our survey. The target audience profile is as follows; the target audience was both male and female orientated and are between the ages of 16-21. They had high interest in a varied genre of music but the rock genre was always rated highly by the people we asked and the features they most expected to see in a rock video were musical insturments, dark colours, atmospheric locations and dramtic settings. We incorpoated these features into our music video to make it successful to the audience when it was published. After our product we uploaded it onto www.youtube.com to get audience feedback about what was good and what was bad about it from the audiences point of view. This process of collecting feedback after production may not have been quite as successful yet but our video will be a constant fixture on the site and monitoring will continue on our video and the comments we are sure to recieve about it.
For our media coursework we have to produce a music video from an unrecognised band that is under copyright protection. The song that we have selected, Bloody Hands is the original work of Big Delusion. As this song is the original works of the band we had to ask for permission, through their MySpace page, which they then granted. The genre of the song is rock and knowing the genre of our song has allowed a collaboration of sorts to establish between visuals and sound in our video to create a rock related video.
The video itself ties much to the idea of the rock in the form of our locations which we carefully selected for heir gloomy and dark features. The locations themselves contribute very much to the rock based mood of our video. It is important when producing a music video to establish a target audience, which in our case is 17-25 year olds with an interest in rock music. By including the rock element in our music video, and taking influence off other rock bands popular to our age group we have met our target audience criteria.
The main storyline for our music video is, the female character has killed the main character. The idea of the killing ties in with the title ‘Bloody Hands’. She is running away from the fact that she has done this and is almost trying to deny what she did. This is shown by giving the female character a split personality by filming her in two roles. One of them is her conscience and the other one is her trying to escape what she’s done. There is overall only two characters of the main narrative, and the band themselves, which are based mainly around the performance side of the video. There are numerous settings for our music video which are, the church, the castle and the square. We have filmed in these settings during college ours only due to the time frame we were able to film in. For our settings we have aimed to incorporate the rock genre by using areas that looked very dramatic on camera because of the lighting in these areas and the locations where they are.
The producing format for our video is the mini DV. The mini DV is the videotape we used to record our film on. This was a vital part of our filming.
The genre of our music video is rock. We incorporated the rock genre introducing a slight gothic element to out locations. We did this by choosing locations that were quite atmospheric and created quite an aromatic effect. While creating our video we used shots such as close ups, long shots, two shots and mid shots to incorporate different effects. For example close ups were used to capture social expressions and long shots were used to get a view of a whole area and for the audience to view how characters interact with their surroundings for the actual camera use itself we used a tripod to keep the camera stead once to allow for good effect. In combination with camera use , editing was also an important factor in the creative process of making the video. The majority of the editing was compiled of fast cuts to create a quicker speed effect for the action scenes. For the performance scenes the shots were edited a lot less to make the band scenes seem slower to the viewer and allowed focus to be on the band for longer periods of time. This was done to emphasise the bands use in the video and as a link to lyrics and visuals. The video was very much linked to visuals in the form of colour. This colour comes in the form of the black and white of the female characters split personality and in the general colour scheme of the video in red and black, which was used as a link in our video to the rock genre. There is use of musical instruments in the band scenes t o emphasise the band members interaction with their surroundings and the singer. The music is used to create tempo in the video with fast paced music accompanying fast paced editing cuts. It was very important for the performance to look as good as possible. We managed to do this while editing by assuring everything to be in sync. A final element of the style of our video is the claim to originality. We incorporated this by using a parallel image in our narrative sequences. This was done to make the female characters conscience an actual being that was able to confront her at the end as a dramatic climax.
To produce our video we used the editing software ‘Final Cut express’. This allowed us to brighten and darken our video to link in with our style influences. Many more videos we have observed have used light9ing effects in their videos to relate to their target audiences, making their videos more popular. The basis of our video was selecting the right people to play our characters. For this we used students from our classes to play the main roles and extras. For the main singers role we had an actual band singer for the role. Using a singer for this role allowed our video to look good to look good to viewers as she was quite natural in the performance and knew what she was doing. While creating our video the roles of director and camera operator were equally shared between members of our group. The role of producer however was mostly performed by Owen.
The bands we observed in the original stages such as ‘Paramore’, ‘30 seconds to mars’ and ‘Big delusion’ themselves all had traits in their videos that are very common when producing rock videos. These were traits such as dramatic performances, rock associated mise en scene and atmospheric locations. We as a group incorporated these into our video to make it original to the rock genre. We wanted to make this video unique by adding our own features. We did this by encorporating a detailed narrative to our video to accompany the performance. The narrative has a certain theme of love and loss which is one rarely seen in rock videos, so it was a claim to our originality. This video was worth making as this has a claim of originality making our video unique in the media industry. This will hopefully allow people to view it and produce their own original ideas in the future.
this is a video of a selection of the band scene clips
Our chosen location was not our first choice we wanted to film inside our college's old school room for a more gothic/rock feel but it was not available when we needed it to film.
This is the first lot of footage that we filmed. Most of these clips will be used in the midst of our lengthy scenes to bulk out our video. These will be the fillers for our video.
These are our location shots. These clips show where our scenes are going to be filmed. We have chosen different locations and atmospheres to create different effects in our video.
Filming for our music video is underway. We have started to film some ten second shots of the church to become fillers that will bulk out our video.
We will soon begin filming the band scenes. Once these scenes are finished then we will be able to do the other remaining scenes such as the battleground and couple scenes.
This is our risk assesment. It is an important document that is needed when filming to evaluate the dangers each location. It can help us to establish safety precautions that will stop us from falling over, slipping, disturbing the public or attracting unwanted attention.
For our chosen song bloody hands by big delusion we have decided to keep to a heavy rock style with lots of instrumental scenes and close ups on guitars drums and the singers.
We will try to link the lyrics in the verse with a visual representation of it. When the vocals get louder and bolder we will focus on the singer and instruments more with them in a dark and mysterious setting. There will be a battle scene at one point for the line "Now the street is just another battle ground."
For the directors research I chose the song 'Kings and Queens' by 30 seconds to mars which was directed by Bartholemew Cubbins(Jared Leto). I selected this song as it ties in with the rock genre which is the genre we are using for our music video.
The music video was directed by Bartholomew Cubbins which is actually an alias for 30 seconds to mars band member Jared Leto.
Leto directed the music videos 'The kill', 'From yesterday' and 'Kings and Queens' under the alias Bartholomew Cubbins and 'A beautiful lie' under the alias AngakokPanipaq. There are some clear comparisons in the features of his videos. For example at the start of the videos a pattern has emerged that Leto likes a dramatic effect so the videos start off quietly and the introduction of the band breaks that silence and instantly draws the audience in.
There is also a strong theme of human issues going on in the world at the moment being portrayed in these videos. In 'Kings and Queens' there is the issue of overpopulation and in 'A beautiful lie' there is the issue of global warming and climate change which is shown through the location itself of an iceberg in the middle of the ocean and this breaking apart.
