Textual Analysis 2 - Owen Lewis

For my textual analysis i chose to look at Paparazzi by Lady Gaga. Even though this song is a pop song it is a good way to compare the difference between it and the music genre. It is also a good way of getting ideas from a music video of a different genre for the making of our own.

Genre characteristics: This pop video does not follow the normal conventions of a pop video as the only thing in it that makes it a pop video is the dance styles used fitting with the lyrics. The actually shots and effects used are more conceptual and very provocative. I believe that lady gaga is trying to re-invent the style of music videos used in the pop industry and be more creative. There is a story before the music video begins this is very much like michael jackson's music video for the song thriller, this idea is very rarely used.

Relationship between lyrics and visuals: In the video there are many points where the dance movement fits to the speed and tempo of the music. but most of the shots in the video involve different shots of lady gaga in different costumes and in different places. There are also some shots of other women in many different situations with them all dead.

Close up of artists and image motifs: As i have said before there are many points where there are many close ups on lady gaga as well as on the dead women. lady gaga is always placed in the centre of the shot to show that she is the focus in the entire music video. lady gaga is also shown to be in many different funky clothing, which is one of the thing lady gaga is known for (her hair and clothing)

Reference to the notion of looking: There is a reference tot he notion of looking as the camera focuses on lady gaga especially her face and her legs. she is also doing some very raunchy dance movements on a coach which is where most of the shots of her are.

Intertextual References: The music video is referenced to the beginning of a hollywood film with the title credits and intro sequence of the mansion and the rose. other than this there are no links in the lyrics or the visuals.

The music video is very performance based as there is a lot of dancing from many people and the way the shots are put together tells a story with the lyrics about the song and its meaning.

Bloody Hands - Big Delusion (LYRICS)

Verse 1:
Baby please don't take my stand, They're watching.
We can't take another step.
You need to walk away.
You've got to run away.
We're all spies, deceit and lies, They're watching.
But lock us up and it will never stop.
Cause we will walk away.
Yeah, we will never stay.

Chorus:
So what happens if we stay,
In this god forsaken, place this day
Will there be blood upon our hands
Will we prevail.
So what happens if we stay,
In this god forsaken, place this day?
Will there be blood up on our hands?
We've got to run away.
Yeah, run away.

Verse 2:
Bring me the gun and step away from the sun,
They're watching.
And if I fail will you break my fall.
We need to run away.
We've got to run away.
Now the street is just another battle ground.
And people are screaming at the sound of my firearm,
They are running away.
Oh what a perfect day.

Chorus:
So what happens if we stay,
In this god forsaken, place this day
Will there be blood upon our hands
Will we prevail.
So what happens if we stay,
In this god forsaken, place this day?
Will there be blood up on our hands?
We've got to run away.
Yeah, run away.

Bridge:
They can see me, pointing loud and clear.
So tell me, is it me that you fear
We can hear them screaming loud and clear.
So tell me is it me that you fear
Is it a dream or a part of my memory
Anyway it's a best selling history.
We made them runaway.
Oh what a perfect day.

Chorus:
So what happens if we stay,
In this god forsaken, place this day
Will there be blood upon our hands
Will we prevail.
So what happens if we stay,
In this god forsaken, place this day?
Will there be blood up on our hands?
We've got to run away.
Whoa, whoa, run away!

Textual Analysis 1 - Beth Horrell

I chose to do a textural analysis of Paramore - Decode. This connects with our music video genre of Rock and as we were creating a music video of Big Delusion- Bloody hands it was good to see how this rock compared with that of Paramore's. All of the group did textural analysis of other music genres to show complete comparison.

Textural Analysis of Paramore - Decode
Genre characteristics : There is generally an association with rock videos and dramatic atmosphere. This is shown in the video with the dark woodland setting which creates a gloomy atmosphere. This seems to put the band on edge and the lead singer emphasises this false anxiety by looking round anxiously with close ups showing big detail to facial expressions.

Relationship between Lyrics/Visuals: There are links to the lyrics and visuals of the movie 'twilight' which is very much incorporated into this as the song was a big part of the movie soundtrack as the lyrics can state whats going on. The lyric 'How did we get here? I used to know you so well.'relates to a moment in the ilm where Edward has been keeping the fact that he's a vampire from her and when she finds out she feels she cant trust him.

Relationship between Music/Visuals:The fast paced music speeds up the editing cuts and the video itself becomes a mix of visuals of the band and the movie 'twilight'. Drum beats create fast pace while the guitar adds to the drama of the setting.

Close ups of artists and star image motifs:There is a close up of the lead singer to focus on her facial expressions which relates to movie clips and characters.

Reference to the Notion of looking:There are a lot of sequences in the video where closeups are used to emphasise the facial features this automatically enforces the notion of looking as our eyes are instantly drawn to the person or people on screen.

Intertextual References: As this song is present on the 'twilight' soundtrack clips of twilight which relate with the lyrics are shown simultaneously in the video. The addition of actor Robert Pattinson aka Edward Cullen immediately increases the popularity with the audience of teenage girls as since twilight has come out in the cinema it has become incredibly popular worldwide.

Performance/Narrative/concept based: this video is mostly performance based as the band paramore are the main focus but due to the success of connecting the intertextual references to the lyrics there is also narrative based context too as the lyrics and the mirroring of the actors to the band members creates a connection of whathappens in the film and the narrative of that to the song itself.
