For my textual analysis i chose to look at Paparazzi by Lady Gaga. Even though this song is a pop song it is a good way to compare the difference between it and the music genre. It is also a good way of getting ideas from a music video of a different genre for the making of our own.
Genre characteristics: This pop video does not follow the normal conventions of a pop video as the only thing in it that makes it a pop video is the dance styles used fitting with the lyrics. The actually shots and effects used are more conceptual and very provocative. I believe that lady gaga is trying to re-invent the style of music videos used in the pop industry and be more creative. There is a story before the music video begins this is very much like michael jackson's music video for the song thriller, this idea is very rarely used.
Relationship between lyrics and visuals: In the video there are many points where the dance movement fits to the speed and tempo of the music. but most of the shots in the video involve different shots of lady gaga in different costumes and in different places. There are also some shots of other women in many different situations with them all dead.
Close up of artists and image motifs: As i have said before there are many points where there are many close ups on lady gaga as well as on the dead women. lady gaga is always placed in the centre of the shot to show that she is the focus in the entire music video. lady gaga is also shown to be in many different funky clothing, which is one of the thing lady gaga is known for (her hair and clothing)
Reference to the notion of looking: There is a reference tot he notion of looking as the camera focuses on lady gaga especially her face and her legs. she is also doing some very raunchy dance movements on a coach which is where most of the shots of her are.
Intertextual References: The music video is referenced to the beginning of a hollywood film with the title credits and intro sequence of the mansion and the rose. other than this there are no links in the lyrics or the visuals.
The music video is very performance based as there is a lot of dancing from many people and the way the shots are put together tells a story with the lyrics about the song and its meaning.
