Textual Analysis 1 - Beth Horrell

I chose to do a textural analysis of Paramore - Decode. This connects with our music video genre of Rock and as we were creating a music video of Big Delusion- Bloody hands it was good to see how this rock compared with that of Paramore's. All of the group did textural analysis of other music genres to show complete comparison.

Textural Analysis of Paramore - Decode
Genre characteristics : There is generally an association with rock videos and dramatic atmosphere. This is shown in the video with the dark woodland setting which creates a gloomy atmosphere. This seems to put the band on edge and the lead singer emphasises this false anxiety by looking round anxiously with close ups showing big detail to facial expressions.

Relationship between Lyrics/Visuals: There are links to the lyrics and visuals of the movie 'twilight' which is very much incorporated into this as the song was a big part of the movie soundtrack as the lyrics can state whats going on. The lyric 'How did we get here? I used to know you so well.'relates to a moment in the ilm where Edward has been keeping the fact that he's a vampire from her and when she finds out she feels she cant trust him.

Relationship between Music/Visuals:The fast paced music speeds up the editing cuts and the video itself becomes a mix of visuals of the band and the movie 'twilight'. Drum beats create fast pace while the guitar adds to the drama of the setting.

Close ups of artists and star image motifs:There is a close up of the lead singer to focus on her facial expressions which relates to movie clips and characters.

Reference to the Notion of looking:There are a lot of sequences in the video where closeups are used to emphasise the facial features this automatically enforces the notion of looking as our eyes are instantly drawn to the person or people on screen.

Intertextual References: As this song is present on the 'twilight' soundtrack clips of twilight which relate with the lyrics are shown simultaneously in the video. The addition of actor Robert Pattinson aka Edward Cullen immediately increases the popularity with the audience of teenage girls as since twilight has come out in the cinema it has become incredibly popular worldwide.

Performance/Narrative/concept based: this video is mostly performance based as the band paramore are the main focus but due to the success of connecting the intertextual references to the lyrics there is also narrative based context too as the lyrics and the mirroring of the actors to the band members creates a connection of whathappens in the film and the narrative of that to the song itself.
